1. Thames Tunnel. The first tunnel known to have been constructed successfully underneath a navigable river.

2. Marc Isambard Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

3. Built between 1825 and 1843.

4. To link the docks on both banks of the Thames. Originally only used by pedestrians.

Thanks for posting about this. I had no idea about the history of the Thames Tunnel until I started investigating what your picture might be.

I have a post all prepared on its history with a couple more photos.

It was a rather remarkable walk through. Its incredible how old the tunnel actually is, and its still in use - which is why its so rare to get a chance to visit.
